Taylor Swift Throwback Thursday: You Belong With Me

We love every Taylor Swift era but the Fearless era was special for all of us. Which is why today, we’re throwing it back to one of Fearless’s big hits: “You Belong With Me”.

“You Belong With Me” was co-written by Swift and songwriter Liz Rose. The song was released in April of 2009 as the albums third single. It quickly rose to success when it hit No.1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs and Adult Contemporary charts. It also hit No.2 on the Hot 100, Mainstream Top 40, and Adult Top 40 charts. The chart success is phenomenal. But that’s not all. “You Belong With Me” is also certified six times platinum and received numerous Grammy nominations to come along with it. What? Who know one song could be so successful.

But how can we be surprised by the success of the track when it’s so catch and relatable. Even the music video is relatable and quite possibly one of the best during the Fearless era. Most girls, even today can relate to the track and wanting to tell their crush how much they belong with them and not the other girl who’s actually dragging them down more than anything else.

What’s so great about the music video? It’s relatable, fun, sassy and Swift plays a brunnet version of herself, which we absolutely love. What more can we ask for? Nothing, if you ask us. But behind every great song and music video is a story, and for Swift, she wrote it from personal experience.

“I remember I was overhearing a conversation one of my friends was having with his girlfriend, and he was obviously getting completely chewed out by her! She was just screaming through the phone at him, and I think it was for something really small, like he told her he’d call her in 10 minutes and instead it was 15 minutes later … something like that,” Swift tells The Boot.

“I remember thinking to myself, “Why does he let her push him around like that because she obviously doesn’t appreciate him?” But instead of saying that out loud to him, I wrote it down in a song.” Thank you, Swift for writing about this experience. We know it’s helped more people than you know. We’re still so thankful for the song to this day.
